LACAAEA's 28th Annual Fish Fry and Annual Scholarship Awards, Sept. 17, 2011
The 28th annual Fish Fry was held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey. The lingering marina layer helped keep the morning temperatures at a comfortable level while many LACAAEA members and Board officers arrived early to help with the set up and food preparations. A number of these early arrivals ventured out for a walk to the Venice canals (Click here for a photo) and back. The first ever Fish Fry 5k Walk was led by Paul Wong. The day featured bright sunshine that burned through the marina layer shortly before noon and continued throughout the day. The beautiful California weather contributed to a very festive environment. Overall, nearly 150 people--LACAAEA members, family, and friends--enjoyed a great day at Mother’s Beach!
Former LACAAEA Presidents and County retirees Henry Yee and Phil Ow relinquished their lengthy roles as the main chefs at a Fish Fry. Instead, they provided guidance and passed on the cooking baton to Kenji Mayeda, Karen Tu, Adrienne Ng, Susie Yan, Borina Nou, Mark Limon, and others who helped prepare a magnificent meal.
Ed Jewik, Richard Jewik, Vicky Gutierrez, Connie Diep and Darlene Hoang helped serve the food. Dulce Maycumber shopped for the many raffles prizes and other items handed out to eager attendees. The registration table was covered by Sam Men, Jung Son, and Linda Quon. The set-up crew included Danny Young, Wayne Watts, George Yan, Mary Lam, Judy Wong, Khrystyne Fong, Cannice Chen, and Konthea Kang. Susan Kudo-Lee was in charge of the crafts table, while Lorraine Sunday-Brown brought the music, DJ equipment, and oversaw the kids’ relay races.
Isaura Capell prepared several pictures boards that featured the 2011 Asian Pacific American Heritage Day celebration and Officers’ Installation Dinner. A number of organizations were also in attendance to provide information to those present: Asian Pacific Community Fund (APCF), Local SEIU, Asian Youth Center (AYC), Robert Half International, and State Farm.
