Mason Fong has AA and AS degrees from Pasadena City College; and a BA in Speech Communication, Certificate of Marketing, and MS in Public Administration from California State University, Los Angeles. Mason began his County career in 1999 after teaching elementary special education for three years with the LA Unified School District. During his first County position with the
Department of Human Resources, he edited the County Digest and coordinated the Employee of the Month program. Later, he moved onto the
Department of Health Services where he performed a variety of administrative assignments for the Facilities and Materials Management Divisions. In 2006, Mason became an Administrative Assistant II with the
Office of Affirmative Action Compliance’s Administration Section, , where he handled a variety of personnel, human resources, and coordinator assignments. In 2008, Mason was promoted to an Administrative Assistant III position with the Department of Public Health, Tobacco Control and Prevention Program, and worked on the Los Angeles County Tobacco Retail License program and oversaw tobacco-related complaints from the public. In 2012, Mason was promoted to Assistant Staff Analyst, where he serves as the Chief of the Tobacco Retail Licensing Unit and oversees the Los Angeles County Tobacco Retail License program.
Mason became an AAEA Board member in 2002 and began his stint as newsletter editor in 2005. He was also a Chapter Council member and newsletter editor of the
American Society for Public Administration(ASPA),
Los Angeles Metropolitan Chapter from 2000-2007. Mason garnered the ASPA National Division III Chapter/Section Newsletter Award in 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007, and is the 2007 recipient of the LA Metro ASPA 2007 Will Baughman Chapter Development Award. Although Mason has not raced since 2007, he still routinely cycles in competitive training rides and is a member of the Pasadena Athletic Association Cycling Club.
Mason feels that the AAEA is a great organization to join because it provides opportunities to network with people from various County departments, forge new friendships, and be exposed to different perspectives. He encourages AAEA members to submit articles for future issues of the newsletter and/or website.
