Angeles, January 25, 2008 -- The 2008 Lunar New Year reception sponsored by the Vietnamese Employees Association of Los
Angeles County (VEALAC) was held on January 25, 2008 at Capital Seafood Restaurant, Monterey Park, California.
Phillip Browning, Director for the Department of Public Social Services delivered the Lunar New Year's Greeting
and well wishes.
John Tran, Mayor of Rosemead was the keynote speaker and provided an inspirational message of opportunity and hope for a better life for the Vietnamese people. Mayor Tran is the first Vietnamese to hold such an Office in America.
VEALAC helped to ring in the 2008 Lunar New Year's celebration by making the event culturally entertaining and lively for all who attended. A theme of warm wishes for a Healthy, Happy, and Prosperous New Year's flowed throughout the evening.
Phillip Chen, Board Deputy for Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, kindly invites Phillip Ow, former president of LACAAEA to join him on stage for a photo, while presenting a proclamation to David Nguyendo, President of VEALAC.
A famous traditional Lion Dance, in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume, performed at the beginning of the reception, Jan. 25, 2008. The dance is traditionally accompanied by gongs, drums and firecrackers, representing the descent of good luck.

The Vietnamese Employees Association of Los Angeles County (VEALAC) hosted a Lunar New Year’s Celebration (Year of the Rat) with many of their talented members providing the exciting entertainment. The event was held on Friday, January 25, 2008 at Capital Seafood Restaurant in Monterey Park, California. The New Year’s greeting and well wishes was delivered by the Director of Public Social Services (DPSS) Mr. Philip Browning.
LACAAEA Executive officers and many other dignitaries attended this festive event which was filled with much excitement, including a Lion Dance, Fashion show, and singing of traditional and contemporary Vietnamese songs as well as English songs too. The fashion show cased clothing worn in the South, Central, and Northern parts of Vietnam. The clothing styles were most intriguing and colorful. The fashion show showed the diversity of fashion styles and cultural history of the Vietnamese people.
The large audience in attendance heard Mayor John Tran of Rosemead deliver a keynote address. As the Keynote speaker he spoke of the history of the Vietnamese people and how the original immigrants “Boat people” endured many hardships and adversities to seek a better life in America. Mayor Tran as the first Vietnamese Mayor in the United States stressed the great sacrifices made by others; thereby, allowing him the opportunity to aspire to excel, fulfill his dreams, and become a symbol of America’s rich and diverse political culture.
In closing the President of the Association Mr. David Nguyendo concluded the evening by recognizing the wonderful singing and cultural talents of the Association’s members and wished everyone a very prosperous, healthy, and Happy Lunar New Year!
