In her position, Ms. Ploehn will direct
all operations of
DCFS, a Department that
has an annual budget of more than $1.5
billion and approximately 7,000 staff. Ms.
Ploehn oversees all the personnel, programs,
facilities and services necessary for the
administration of protective services,
foster care, adoption and treatment for
children in accordance with federal, state
and county statutory and regulatory
requirements.
Ms. Ploehn is the first Director to be selected from within the Department.
She began her career with the Department prior to its current structure in 1979
as a treatment counselor working with youth at the MacLaren Children’s Center.
She went to work as a social worker until1989 when she was promoted to an
assistant regional administrator. After serving in various administrative
positions, Ms. Ploehn took over as a deputy director in 2003.

Susan Kerr is Chief Deputy Director for the Department of Children and Family
Services (DCFS). Prior to assuming this position in October 2006, she was the
Chief Deputy for the Department of Mental Health (DMH) for almost three and a
half years. In her current capacity, she has primary responsibility for the
Department’s financial management, governmental relations, information
technology, risk management, skid row project, contracts, human resources,
training, and facilities management and acquisition operations. She also plays a
key role in the Title IV-E Waiver and Katie A. settlement agreement activities.
