LACAAEA Installation 2008 Dinner on July 31, 2008

Honorable Judge Arthur M. Lew (L), and Honorable Mike Eng (C), California State Assembly, listens a speech deliverred by Honorable Dr. Judy Chu, California State Board of Equalization, at the Installation 2008 Dinner, on July 31, 2008.

Bio of Honorable Judge Arthur Lew: Judge Arthur Lew has a very balanced background in the law, first working as a deputy public defender and later as a deputy district attorney. This knowledge of both sides of the system seemed like the perfect training for becoming a judge.

Judge Lew is a native Angelino, born at the Queen of Angels Hospital. One of five children, he grew up working in the family business in Little Tokyo. After graduating from Los Angeles High School, he enrolled at California State University Los Angeles in 1963 as a business major. Concurrently, he joined the Navy Reserves. Two years later he found himself on active duty in Camp Pendleton Hospital working as a hospital corpsman. After returning to school, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1970. At that time, he joined the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office as a deputy assessor. After a year in the Assessor’s office, the desire to continue his education led him to enroll at Southwestern Law School while continuing his County employment. In 1975 he graduated law school working at the Assessor’s Office for three more years. In 1978 two significant events occurred in Lew’s life, he got married to Diana Wong and he began working for the child support division of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. After a year, Judge Lew moved to the Public Defender’s Office to develop his trial skills. After five years, he moved back to the District Attorney’s Office. After a number of years in the District Attorney’s Office, Judge Lew applied for a bench position and in 1991 he was appointed to the Long Beach Municipal Court. In 1994, Judge Lew was appointed to the Superior Court bench first working in the Criminal Courts Building, then in 1996 at the Compton Courthouse where he currently resides.
