Liren Zhang (DPSS) plays a four-stringed lute called the "Pipa". It is one of the oldest Chinese musical instruments with over 2000 years of history. Contemporary musicians hold the Pipa vertically in the lap, plucking the strings with both hands using plectra (picks) on the fingernails.
